In a Pew Research Center analysis of 68,879 Google searches from March 2025, searchers who saw an AI summary were less likely to click traditional results, and one summary showed 8% versus 15% click rates, with only 1% clicking links inside the summary. AI visibility now matters even when a user never leaves the answer box. The answer itself can carry value.
The click gap is now visible
The traffic story is no longer just about fewer visits. Pew’s later follow-up on Americans’ mixed feelings about AI summaries showed the format had become familiar enough to spark a broader debate about how search should work, while Google AI Overviews cut publisher referral traffic by 25%.
AI platforms were sending some traffic but not enough to offset zero-click search, and by March 2025 keyword data was more telling than CTRs when measuring Google’s AI Overviews. Keyword demand, prompt wording, and answer placement reveal whether a page is influencing discovery even when the session never lands on the site.
What visibility means when the answer is the destination
For publishers, visibility now includes being cited, summarized, and recalled even when sessions stay flat. For brands, share of voice has to include how often an answer engine names them, what it says about them, and whether it places them ahead of competing products or publishers. For agencies, the old report card built around rankings and clicks is too blunt for an environment where a user can read a synthesized response, form an opinion, and move on without a visit.
Prompt data has become a new obsession. In late 2025, publishers were hunting for AI prompt data and getting it from third-party companies, a sign that teams needed a better view of the questions that trigger answers in the first place. By July 2025, zero-click search was already changing how small brands show up online and how they spend: spending shifts toward being included in the answer rather than winning the click after it.
The metrics that belong on the dashboard now
A useful dashboard in the AI era needs to measure more than traffic volume. The replacement stack starts with citation frequency, then adds inclusion rate, prominence, and downstream effect. If the brand appears often but is buried at the bottom of an answer, that is a different outcome from being named first and framed accurately.
Track these fields together:
- Citation frequency across Google AI Overviews and other answer engines
- Inclusion rate in AI summaries for priority queries
- Prominence, including whether the brand is named, linked, or paraphrased
- Accuracy, especially when AI systems compress or misstate a message
- Brand recall signals such as branded search lift and direct visits
- Downstream conversion influence, including assisted conversions and revenue that follows AI-driven discovery
These metrics should sit beside traffic, not behind it. AI visibility can be real even when referral sessions are flat, but a lift in citations is not the same as a lift in revenue. The latter needs proof through assisted conversions, returning users, branded demand, or pipeline movement.
How the industry is already reorganizing around zero-click discovery
By early 2026, Digiday’s research on AI applications, agentic AI, AI search, and GEO/AEO showed these topics had become a planning priority rather than a side experiment. A separate April 2026 report found agencies were competing for SEO talent as client demand for zero-click expertise surged. Mondelez was overhauling its $3.5 billion digital commerce strategy in the era of AI search.
A July 2026 New Engen result, drawing on a Locus survey of more than 1,000 active U.S. online shoppers, found 45% said they now use AI tools as part of their shopping journey.
Digiday’s July 2026 Media Briefing called AI visibility publishers’ newest currency.
How to separate correlation from causation
A rise in AI citations does not prove causation by itself. It may reflect stronger brand authority, better content structure, more frequent crawling, or a query mix that was already moving in your favor.
Use matched comparisons instead of single snapshots. Compare branded and nonbranded queries, AI-visible and non-AI-visible pages, and periods before and after content changes. If answer inclusion rises while branded search, direct traffic, and assisted conversions also move, the case for business impact gets stronger. If referral traffic falls but citations rise, that tells you distribution is shifting, not necessarily that demand is disappearing.
