IAB pushes AI visibility standard as only 16% of brands track it

The Interactive Advertising Bureau published Measuring Visibility in the AI Era, adding a standard for AI visibility just as only 16% of brands track the metric. The gap matters because AI answer engines can recommend, summarize or cite a brand without producing a traditional click, which leaves standard SEO reports incomplete.

IAB’s new playbook breaks the problem into four signals: Presence, Prominence, Portrayal and Persuasion. The group also says more than 20 companies now sell AI visibility tools, a crowded market that has grown faster than any common reporting language. That has left marketers comparing incompatible dashboards while brands try to understand whether they appear in ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and other answer surfaces at all.

The IAB push did not start with the August release. The organization hosted State of Data: AI in Advertising - Unlocking What’s Possible on Sep. 15, 2025, then released its first AI Transparency and Disclosure Framework in January 2026. In June, IAB held Redesigning Work in the AI Era, and in July it published The Next Phase of AI: From Adoption to Accountability, which framed AI as an operational issue rather than a test project.

The new visibility work also has practitioner support behind it. Justin Inman said on LinkedIn that he helped build the Measuring Visibility in the AI Era working group. IQRush said on July 30, 2026 that it joined an IAB working group focused on AI visibility measurement, a sign that vendors are aligning themselves with the standard as it takes shape.

For marketers, the measurement list is no longer theoretical. Citations show whether a brand was used as a source. Mention share shows how often it appears versus competitors. Answer inclusion shows whether it made the cut inside the response itself. Source attribution shows whether the model credited the brand, the publisher or neither. Those signals are the closest thing AI search has to rankings, impressions and clicks, and they are the difference between knowing a brand is discoverable and guessing that it is.
