Chemist Warehouse sees 220% quarterly jump in AI Overview visibility

Chemist Warehouse recorded a 220% increase in AI Overview appearances over a single quarter, a sharp gain that puts the Australian pharmacy chain deeper into Google’s answer layer before shoppers reach a blue link. For a retailer built on health, beauty, vitamins and pharmacy categories, that kind of visibility matters because the query often arrives with intent already attached: a symptom to check, a product to compare or a brand to verify.

The size of the jump suggests Chemist Warehouse is being cited more often inside AI-generated summaries, not merely moving up traditional rankings. In practical terms, that makes the brand easier to surface on searches where users are weighing products, reading health and wellness guidance, or trying to narrow a purchase decision without clicking through multiple pages. The strongest gains in AI search usually come when a site’s category pages, product copy and brand authority line up with the questions Google’s systems choose to answer directly.

That aligns with how Google’s AI Overviews are reshaping retail search. Adthena says its AIO Impact Index tracks how often AI Overviews appear and how often they carry ads, and its data puts AI Overviews’ reach at up to 57% of search results. Separate 2025 research from Seer Interactive found organic click-through rates on informational queries with AI Overviews fell 61% since mid-2024, while paid click-through rates on those same queries fell 68%. In other words, more visibility in the answer surface can mean more exposure, but not automatically more traffic.

Chemist Warehouse’s broader scale helps explain why the result draws attention. Sigma Healthcare describes the chain as Australia’s largest discount pharmacy chain, and the company’s market profile expanded again in February 2025 when the ASX said the Chemist Warehouse and Sigma Healthcare merger saw more than $27 billion in new Sigma shares begin trading. The Australian Financial Review later described the ASX debut as Australia’s 22nd largest listed company and a $34 billion stockmarket debut.

The retailer has also been experimenting with AI beyond search. Retail Technology Innovation Hub reported in December 2024 that Chemist Warehouse partnered with Augmodo to give store associates spatial AI assistants. That operational interest in AI sits alongside a search environment that is getting more volatile: Ahrefs data showed AI Overviews on 48% of all search queries in March 2026, up from 34.5% in December 2025. For Chemist Warehouse, the headline is not just that AI visibility rose. The harder question is whether those answer-box impressions are translating into measurable business value, or simply increasing zero-click presence.
