Chemist Warehouse gains 220% more AI Overview visibility in one quarter

Chemist Warehouse recorded a 220% increase in AI Overview appearances over one quarter, a sharp rise in the brand’s exposure inside Google’s answer surfaces. The metric is visibility, not traffic, but for a pharmacy chain that sells into high-intent health and retail searches, that kind of placement can shape which brands shoppers see before they ever reach a blue-link result.

The gain lands in a search environment where answer boxes are taking up more real estate. Adthena says its AIO Impact Index tracks how often Google AI Overviews appear in search results and how often they contain ads, and the company says AI Overviews now affect up to 57% of search results. Separate analysis summarized in the market has pointed to steep click erosion on queries where AI Overviews appear, with organic CTR on informational searches down 61% since mid-2024 and paid CTR down 68%. Ahrefs data summarized in March 2026 put AI Overviews on 48% of all queries, up from 34.5% in December 2025.

Chemist Warehouse is not a small test case. Sigma Healthcare describes it as Australia’s largest discount pharmacy chain, and its scale widened again when the Chemist Warehouse and Sigma Healthcare merger sent more than $27 billion in new Sigma shares trading on the Australian Securities Exchange on 13 February 2025. The Australian Financial Review described that ASX debut as Australia’s 22nd largest listed company and put the stockmarket debut value at $34 billion. Brand size does not guarantee AI visibility, but it does give Google more entity signals to draw from when it summarizes health, pharmacy, beauty and product-comparison queries.

The more useful question for marketers is what likely moved the needle. A jump of this size is consistent with cleaner product pages, stronger category coverage, tighter schema, and more consistent brand authority across the web. It can also reflect Google’s increased confidence in surfacing a known retailer across branded and semi-branded searches. For multi-location chains, that distinction matters: a surge in appearances on Chemist Warehouse queries is not the same thing as a durable gain on non-brand health or pharmacy questions.

Chemist Warehouse has also been pushing AI beyond search. In December 2024, the company partnered with Augmodo to give store associates spatial AI assistants, a sign that the retailer is already treating AI as an operational layer, not just a marketing layer. The search result here is narrow but important: answer-engine visibility can move quickly, and for large retailers the gain only becomes meaningful when it extends beyond branded demand into the category queries that still shape discovery.
