AI search makes Google Business Profile the new local discovery gatekeeper

Google rebranded Google My Business to Google Business Profile in 2021, and for many local searches the listing is now the first screen customers see. In AI-driven local search, the business profile is no longer a sidecar to the website; it is the front door, especially for mortgage lenders, real estate professionals and other local brands where trust, timing and neighborhood fit decide the click or the call.

The profile is now the discovery layer

The old website-first instinct misses how AI answers work. If an answer engine can identify the business, confirm the service area, pull hours and trust signals, and present that information without sending the user elsewhere, the discovery moment is already over before the homepage loads. That is why Google Business Profile now carries more weight than raw traffic in the first touchpoint, while the website increasingly serves as supporting infrastructure that deepens the entity behind the listing.

This shift is not theoretical. Google’s local surface has only become more central as Search has added AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Audit the profile before you touch the homepage

Start with the fields Google and answer engines can read without guessing. Categories tell the system what the business actually is, reviews tell it whether people trust it, hours tell it whether it is open, photos tell it whether the place looks current, and service descriptions tell it what work it does and where it does it. If any of those are stale, thin or contradictory, the machine has less reason to choose the listing as the best local answer.

The most useful audit order is simple:

  • Categories, because they frame relevance
  • Reviews, because they shape prominence and trust
  • Hours, because bad hours break the user experience immediately
  • Photos, because they signal recency and legitimacy
  • Service descriptions and service-area data, because they tell Google who the business serves and what it does
  • Name, address and phone consistency, because local systems punish confusion across listings, directories and the website

Clicks can fall without visibility falling with them

Pew Research Center’s July 22, 2025 analysis by Athena Chapekis and Anna Lieb found that Google users were less likely to click on links when an AI summary appeared in the results. Google publicly disputed that interpretation, and CNET and The Register amplified the finding, but the underlying warning still lands for local search: a summary can absorb the first interaction.

Local discovery rarely starts with a deep browse session. It starts with a quick question about who serves this neighborhood, who is open now, and which business looks credible enough to contact. If Google surfaces the profile, the map pack or an AI-generated answer first, the business can still win the decision even if the website receives fewer sessions.

Google’s own guidance still points to the basics

Google Search Central’s May 21, 2025 guidance on performing well in Google’s AI experiences on Search says the underpinnings of what it has long advised still matter for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google still advises sites to help it understand pages, make content helpful and accessible, and keep structure clean enough for machines to parse.

Google Business Profile help guidance says local ranking depends on relevance, distance and prominence. Detailed, accurate and complete business information helps users find businesses more easily, and that principle has only become more important as AI experiences pull from structured sources instead of waiting for a click.

Treat the website as proof, not the starting line

The website still matters, but its job is changing. It reinforces the business name, services, service areas and expertise that the profile already introduced, while giving Google and users more context when they do click through. That means schema, on-page structure and service pages are not optional polish; they are the support layer that keeps the profile credible.

For local-service brands in housing, the operational handoff matters as much as the markup. SEO, reputation management, local operations and front-line staff need to keep hours, photos, services and neighborhood coverage aligned so the machine-readable version of the business matches reality. If the listing is the answer engine’s chosen source, the conversion path may begin inside Google Business Profile and end on the website only after the decision is mostly made.
